Las Nubes de Coronado, San Jose, Costa Rica - map and pictures
Many have been trying to understand 'where' we are moving … some people are unsure where in the world is Costa Rica.
When we disclose that our new location will be in the mountains of Costa Rica, the common question is "how close to the beach" will we be living .
We hope the below map and pictures help!
Location: Las Nubes de Coronado, San Jose, Costa Rica

Elevation: 4,982 feet, Latitude: 9°58'59.54"N, Longitude: 83°59'16.80"W
House Exterior: Las Nubes de Coronado, San Jose, Costa Rica
House Interior: Las Nubes de Coronado, San Jose, Costa Rica
For the record: we will be about 4 hours from both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean/Atlantic Ocean by car trip through the mountains (30 minutes by airplane).

Sir,
I was just wondering why you chose to live so high in the mountains (almost 5000 ft)? My mother, who is retired, lives at about 5500 ft near the Hotel Tirol above San Rafael de Heredia. At nights, it can get chilly (upper 40's to low 50's Fahrenheit) and sometimes it doesn't make it to 70 during the day. I plan on retiring there myself in a few more years once I leave the Coast Guard (working on 30 years) and I'm planning on living somewhere between 1800 to 2800 ft in elevation so I don't get too hot or too cold. Did you give that any consideration when you chose your house and property?
By the way, my wife is from the Philippines so she hates cold so that is why I will live at a lower altitude.
Thanks for this blog by the way and good luck on your finding work down in The Switzerland of the Americas, Costa Rica!

Hi Andy,
As you are aware, Costa Rica is small in size while being one of the most topographically diverse regions of the world ... 'where the mountains meet the sea'.
You are very wise to do your research as to where you would like to live in Costa Rica prior to making a commitment to purchase. Many have made ill-advised decisions to buy land or a home that has beautiful beach views, only to find the heat that comes with the beach home is too much to enjoy on a daily basis.
I have traveled Costa Rica for many years, but admittedly still don't know where I would like to settle. Our initial home in Las Nubes de Coronado is that of a friend that has owned the property for many years. I plan on taking full advantage of my in-country status to make a more informed decision as to where we will live long-term.
P.S.: For the record, I have met many Las Nubes residents that wouldn't trade their mountain home location for any other in Central America – the views are truly breathtaking and a cozy fire in the fireplace is a great way to spend the evening ;o)

Hi Bill,
Congratulations on making the leap to our favorite destination - Costa Rica. We are looking for property to build a home not unlike that you show in your photos, as we are planning to move there this year.
Can I impose on you for an opinion on what land would cost in Las Nubes, or what Realtor is active in the area?
I understand the area is beginning to develop with road improvements. We are coming to San Jose next week to look for a temporary rental as we search for land up above Coronado. Thanks for the great blog.
