Why Are You Moving to Costa Rica?! ... isn’t that near the Virgin Islands?
Now that my relocation from the United States to Costa Rica is eleven (11) days away, the questions regarding my move are regular.
For the record: Costa Rica is in Central America, one country North of Panama
My move to Costa Rica could be classified as a calculated gamble ... this from a man that doesn't buy lottery tickets or gamble even when staying in Las Vegas.
I have been visiting Costa Rica over 7 years, married a Tica and my son is a native Costarricense – my love of Costa Rica includes all it has to offer (topographically, culturally, etc., etc.).
Several years ago I was fifty pounds over-weight sitting in my Chicago area office during the cold of winter wondering why I continued to live in a place that was either too cold most of the year or too hot during the brief summer months. I then had a brief health crisis that moved me to change my lifestyle while accelerating the rethinking of my priorities. The rest as they say; is history.
Life is short and I’m moving to Costa Rica for the adventure and living of life. My son’s reintegration into his native culture and language are also important factors … he will be completely bilingual, well educated and more worldly due to the many different nationalities and backgrounds that are condensed into the small geographical area of Costa Rica.
However, unlike a retiree or independently wealthy individual - I must figure out how to earn an income to support my family after the move to Costa Rica. This type of move is certainly not for everybody … if you want life and/or job security, get a nursing degree and move to Arizona (or wherever the baby boomers are migrating state-side).
As the founder and owner of a successful U.S. based mortgage lender, my familiarity in the Real Estate marketplace should allow me to make a living in the ever-growing and hopefully recession resistant Costa Rica market that draws investors and retirees from all around the world.
Admittedly this is a working theory and I fully understand from experience that flexibility will be the only real way to make this a successful endeavor. If my original ideas don't bear fruit, I am fully prepared to teach Salsa & Merengue dancing to pasty-white vacationers (this is complete humor, I can’t dance … yet :o)
Stay tuned ... for all the planning, this adventure is just getting started!
