Spirit Airlines announces major layoffs ... flights to Costa Rica could be affected.

Spirit Airlines
(www.SpiritAir.com), a popular discount airline with service to Costa Rica announced May 31, 2008 in a letter to union leaders that up to 60 percent of its flight attendants and 40 percent of its pilots face layoffs due to operating losses attributed to unforeseen rises in fuel costs.

Exactly how these potential cutbacks will impact the many Costa Rica, Latin America and Caribbean travelers that rely on Spirit Airlines for discounted flights remains to be determined.

If you already have Spirit Airline tickets booked for future flights, I strongly recommend establishing back-up plans ... but be aware other major airlines servicing the same areas such as American, Continental and Delta are all re-evaluating their services as well.

The shake-up cannot be good for travel in the short-term.  Stay tuned!

Hi Bill, The airline thing is a bit scary! I booked my flights for September on American today. I have heard that American Airlines receives some government assistance verses Spirit Airlines is more likely to drop more flights. And from what I have experienced with Spirit, the customer service is almost non existent. Well...this is my gut instinct at least.  I have a trip on Spirit to Peru in August.  I am keeping my fingers crossed they don't bail! Scott
